    So been on the forums for ages and thought that is about time I start a thread on my car.

    Bit of history first;

    My first silvia was a dead stock 92 sr20de Q's.

    That car was a crash course in mechanics for me and in the 5 years I owned it I learned heaps (obviously with the help of mates and the silwa community). Made heaps of mistakes, burned money on crappy parts, had the car break down on me numerous times...but when I was looking through photos to start this thread I realised I would do it all again because of how much I learned and how satisfied I felt when it did (on the rare occasion) work well.

    _DSC0441_zpsd893c8bf.jpgIMGP5952_zps9f5ead1f.jpg

    Unfortunately all good things come to an end and after 5 years I got done by the po-po

    Car was stickered and I got a huge list from the inspection centre.... Decided I didn't have the time (was now working full time) to fix it so I tried to sell the car. Was basically giving it away and couldn't get it sold so ended up stripping it down and selling everything off...

    DSC_8160_zps28df325e.jpg

    DSC_8152_zps3d153fe3.jpg

    After the silvia was sold I picked up a godzilla;

    DSC_8261_zps5b37b8c4.jpg

    That thing was an amazing piece of engineering. However I was never really that attached to it. When I finally got it down the track it was apparent I didn't have the skill needed to tame it....basically I had invested in the car instead of getting a cheaper car and investing in my driving skill...was a huge and costly mistake.

    It was around this time that I finished up in FIFO. Took a city job and before long realised that the gtr was not a good daily. Sitting in traffic on St Georges terrace with a lumpy cam and rich mixture gets you evil stares from people at bus stops.....the car was sold not long after.

    Decided to take a break from cars and got myself a daily poosar which I still have.

    After almost two years I was ready to get back into a silvia. I have always and still want an s15. I think they are a future classic and will be like the 240z in another 30 years. Looked at heaps but nothing really caught my fancy.

    Then a forum member advertised a 180. Looked real clean and had a quality mod list so I went to check it out. Was even better in person and when the seller took me for a drive and flicked the aircon on I just couldn't say no (yep, s13 with a working aircon!!!! :o ). Even tho I still wanted an s15, this was a real clean car at probably 30% of the price of an s15 with the same gear....I couldn't justify the s15 and also told myself I would spend the extra cash on more track time so I bought the 180!

    Currently I can't find my phone and I'm pretty tipsy so this is the only pic I have of it for now;

    ScreenShot2014-11-02at13834am_zpsd8930c3

    Its getting late and I'm old (too old for a s13 according to my mates) so ill leave it at this for now....Will get into the mods list and plans later!

    Thanks for reading guys!  ;)

    So not too long after picking up the car it was my brothers birthday.

    He has an old escort which was his first car. Absolutely loves it to bits but unfortunately it has not been running in more than three years.

    Screenshot_2014-11-02-10-37-45_zpszl3c9m

    He had also never done a track day. So I thought I would give him the keys to the 180 and let him have a go at AHG;

    Screenshot_2014-11-02-10-38-22_zpss18nim

    He had a good time and I also found out a few things on the car needed attention;

    1. Wheels were shaking at 120km+
    2. Diff was basically open
    3. Tyres had tread but were very old (close to 10 years) and were not providing enough grip.

    Also found that there was a water leak in the boot.

    So went to work on these issues. First i dropped the wheels off to get straightened. Was going to just buy a new set but decided it would be cheaper and easier (without 5 stud) to fix these wheels. I kinda liked them anyway. So for a few days the 180 sat on bricks ghetto style;

    20141011_160613_zps0zwvknqx.jpg

    Wheels cam back and with new gktech front spacers to fill the guards better and some hub centering rings the shake was all but taken care of.

    The boot leak was found to be coming from the lights (same as my first s13). So that was fixed up with a tube of windscreen sealer....then saw some type x light come up for sale on the forums like a week later....fml....

    20140929_114727_zpsuwxnvm3i.jpg

    Still havent taken care of the tyre's so if you guys have suggestions of which ones to use and were to get them let me know!

    ok so after getting on the loud pedal too early, loosing traction, sliding and running into a kerb on the cruise (I have dishooooonoooooured my famawi :bow: ) the urgency behind getting better tyres has suddenly increased..... i was pretty lucky there was no damage really..

    anyone got suggestions?

    I have run 595's and thought they were ok-ish....

    I see a lot of people use Achilles but haven't driven on them myself...

    What about KU36's?

    Small update;

    Tyres have arrived. Went to pick them up today. Guys at the depo had a bit of a laugh as they didn't think they would fit in the 180, Little do they know this car, being a hatch, is also supremely practical!

    20141114_143515_zpsgbwckuqa.jpg

    They are Nitto Invo's

    225/45/17

    245/45/17

    Pretty funky tread pattern and also a size wider all round than my existing hankooks. I know most people go for the stretched look on the forum but my wheels have stuff all poke and I kinda like the look of a bit of tyre bulge, makes the car look more muscular IMO....hopefully they fit.

    kind thinking about painting the lettering on the sidewalls. Seems to be popular as of late but not sure if I can pull it off with a relatively stock looking car.

    In other news my housemate ordered a 2.5m cat playground for our cat......possibly whilst high....

    Screenshot_2014-11-05-08-09-50_zpsa2rdm1

    cat seems to love it!

    unlike the lions mane that i got it....cat hates that.....

    With the new tyres in I'm now finding the car is too low on the front.

    Previous tyres were 215/45. New front ones are 225/45 so they are a bit taller.

    Looks better but real difficult to live with everyday

    20141128_202953_zpsujghsuxq.jpg

    went down to masters searching for answers.....

    20141128_202723_zpsrg8wapva.jpg

    So yeah that helped but still reckon a slight lift at the front is needed.

    In other news I managed to get the car down the track with the new rubber attached and had a great day!

    However the fuel line popped off the fuel rail and squirted all over the engine...really I was just lucky it didn't catch on fire.

    The clamp was loose. I must have forgot to put it back on when I was trouble shooting the car's starting problem a few weeks earlier.

    So after the track day the following is needed:

    • Fire Extinguisher
    • Timing chain/guide is starting to rattle a bit and may need to be replaced. Got a feeling the engine my need to be removed to do this...
    • Noticed the oil pressure gauge shaking a bit after runs but stabilising when the car was turned off an on again (much like my pc)
    • Brake upgrade
    • Steering wheel extension (boss kit extension)
    • Maybe a low railed seat as my helmet was touching the ceiling

    The instructor mentioned the sprint series comp they have at the RAC centre. Thinking I may give it a go next year.

    Had some spare time on Sunday so gave the car a polish.

    Soooooo much crud came off the black roof. Cloth was clogged with black soot.

    White areas of the car were good. My first time using a clay bar as well. Was happy with the results...

    Ok so got my new cam cover gasket delivered so thought I would pull it off and see if there is anything obvious that is making the chain rattle.

    When it came off i noticed that there seemed to be a bit of sludge

    Had been reading on the inter-web that the top chain guide can be removed and that this is sometimes a source of the rattle so i took it off.

    The rattling did seem to reduce on idle however its still there at cruising revs and now when the car is turned off there is a single louder rattle just before it shuts down.....

    I think tomorrow I may just put it back in...Thinking since its an original engine with 165km it's likely just a stretched chain/worn tensioner...

    Oil pressure issues your having is probably related to the rattle, the tensioner is oil fed and without proper pressure to it it's simply not tightening the chain enough. This also streches the chain even more due to increased load caused by the excessive slack.

    Sounds like engine freshen up time before it completely dies in the ass.

    I also share your opinion of fat tyres making the car look tougher. Stretch isn't for everyone

    Video the noise? This is one I thought was timing chain rattle. Turned out it had spun main bearing number 3 so I'm fairly sure it was loosing oil pressure through there causing the chain to become loose.

    It is kinda similar yeah...but not as pronounced

    The oil pressure shake was only present on the track day when I was pushing the car harder otherwise its steady. The noise however is constant.

    How would I check to see if it is the bearing that is the issue?

    The car seems to drive fine. Engine makes good power and I think its had a pretty easy life as its just running the stock turbo @ 14 psi....
