    Yep that's what I usually do....however this time round I have been practicing the fine art of turning the other cheek...(walking away when I get frustrated and then coming back later.)

    Finally got around to putting the engine back in the car.

    Process went quite smoothly until startup. Given this is the first time I have opened an engine I was super nervous.

    So the car fired up basically straight away but immediately it sounded like I had a rattle gun in side it. I cut the motor after about two seconds.

    Called a mate and asked about possible causes (I thought it was timing chain but removed the engine cover to find it pretty tight).

    So he reckoned that because I had the motor upside down a lot during the rebuild the lifters were the likely cause and asked me to run the car for 30 seconds.

    I restarted the car and ran it for 30 seconds. After about ten seconds the noise decreased substantially but was still present.

    Seems like I need to remove and bleed the lifters........ :cry:

    Cheers for that Zee!

    pic from the install below!;

    Screen%20Shot%202015-03-29%20at%2010.51.

    So I tried to pull off the cams tonight. Cable tied the timing chain to the gears, removed the chain tensioner and removed all 5 caps on the exhaust cam.

    The rear side of the cam popped up but there was no movement in the cam at the front near the tooth gear.

    Is there anything I have forgot to remove or is it just the chain tension that is still holding the cam in place?

    Yep thats it....shat a brick when i first started it coz i thought i dropped something in there....

    I was following a guide on NS.com about how to do this and they didn't mention unbolting the actual gear wheel from the cam.

    Looks like i may need to do this in order to shift the cam shaft out of the way, Job for tonight.

    Mark the chain link, mark the tooth. Undoing the cam gear isn't overly hard but not necessary. To answer your question yes the tension is holding it in place, leave on side cable tied on and just take the chain tensioner out.

    Cool ill give that a go then.

    Had not thought about just leaving one side tied down and using the slack in the chain to move the cam on the other side.

    Cheers Lee!

    Ok I couldn't get the slack thing to work....may have something to do with having a new chain and new guides (ie plastic not worn down, chain not elongated)

    I think ill have to take the cam gears off....

    I've taken cams out numerous times with new chain and guides without removing gears. It does get a little fiddly especially if your doing it by yourself. I found rotating the opposite cam slightly so it was in full tension helped a lot. It will pull back the extra slack and give you just the right amount to get the other can out

    that does sound like what I am doing. I have a socket on one cam and am rotating it slightly whilst trying to unhook the chain on the other cam.

    Which cam shaft do you take out first? I'm doing the exhaust side currently.....

    You should be able to do either. Intake might be easier to take out though since that side is tightened by the chain tensioner. Rotate the exhaust anti clockwise till tight and touch the crank clockwise to make sure right hand side chain is tensioned. Lift slightly more from back of cam so your tilting the gear forward and it should allow the chain to lean slightly further forward. Should be able to unhook chain and get cam out. If your not located far away, I can come give you a hand

    Had a go at rotating to get more slack.

    It worked a bit but i didn't have enough to get the cam out. Tried to rotate it some more but the cog started slipping.

    Ended up taking out the exhaust cam cog and then took the intake out in once piece.

    Thankfully the lifters came out easily and I bled all eight of them relatively easily.

    Gonna start re-installing cams tomorrow, getting there....slowly...

    Before I start I gotta give a big shout out to Jesus. If he had not gone through that crucification I wouldn't have had the time to work on the SR.

    With this in mind i put the shout out to Jesus for guidance in getting the motor stated....according to Ice Cube the shout out went to the wrong Jesus

    icecube_zpsh8aikr2z.jpg

    Fortunately for me Japanese Jesus must have heard my prayers and not too unlike Jesus, over this weekend, the SR rose from the dead to once again power my 180sx

    nissan%20jesus_zps8beu2uvr.jpg

    It was blowing white smoke for about 15 minutes then cleared away. Have put 200km on it over the weekend (keeping it under 3000rpm) and so far its going great!

    Suffice to say this was basically me this weekend;
