Might be time for an update,

i gave myself a bit of the break from the racecar and actually enjoyed myself for a couple of weekends....instead of sweating, cursing and bleeding for this sheetcunt car.

    Now where are we?

replaced the gearbox with a S14 one....my gearbox pops out of gears on decelerations and it was highly annoying.

no photos of this, but you know what a gearbox looks like?

I removed everything turbo side and re-made the gate pipe. now the gate is in a serviceable location.

Installed heavier springs into the gate to....cause more boost.

    pUJPacL.jpg

Melts made up my coil leads...

    JNAQmSf.jpg

we actually managed to get it to fire up first try, even with some more than average internet wiring advice....double checking everything for yourself does wonders!

Got the GTX3067 installed and sitting pretty.

    yDb2eXR.jpg

managed to get all the existing pipework to line up, just had to trim the intake pipe and use two different joiners for the new sizes (3082 was 4inch in and 2.5 out / this is 3inch in and 2inch out)

    mandatory progress photo

    nKR2VVG.jpg

    mandatory CAT photo.

    hRgOaLS.jpg

    so next break =

Install new injectors, moving from 1000cc to 1550cc

    Sort out a catch can

getting tuned and hope like frackery it does not have any more issues.

another break, another few days of SR fail's. or mainly my own fails.

    starting from start.

hotside pipe modified with a plate so could tap in the bleed valve.

    TCT5qBc.jpg

Installed a forefront industries - Provent type catch can...has a washable filter inside...have one on the 4wd and it works great, so figured it would work on the SR.

I'm not a fan of the clear pipe, but on the dyno it was fun watching the dirty misty air come in one side and nice clean air come out the other side.

    ArOZLzX.jpg\

I had the cam cover of the check timing, as with the vct intake gear i was trying to advance it a tooth to make it run on the sr. (i did this previously i just wanted to double check + tensioner was leaking oil)

during this whole thing i managed to start the car afterward with the ratchet still in the main pulley....it quickly undid the bolt for me.

    eeS66oB.jpg

Put the new injectors in (from xspurt 1000cc to xspurt 1650cc) and low and behold the plugs are different!

I thought they would be the same so i didn't order any.....

find this out on the morning i'm meant to be getting a tune!

Lucky MTQ had adaptor plug and i was able to get that problem sorted quickly.

Car went up on the dyno.

Once again it did not preform as expected.

Boost was slow to spool and power was low.

Once again, cam timing was brought up.

that's and the last part of the session the cam tentioner starting pissin out oil again.

It also started missing and while changing spark plugs i managed to break one. thats was a frack around.

andrew managed to get the thread out cleanly, lucky enough.

    nqTQnWL.jpg

and the dyno result, see it makes boost slightly earlier than the old setup, but only a few hundred RPM.

    DHeO4ELh.jpg

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................. after another disappointing run with the car.

Had a few beer and started reading online again about le cams.

Started to get a picture of where i went wrong.

I have the standard cam gear (not adjustable) and i rotated it one tooth anti clockwise

This would be vaguely correct if it was an adjustable cam gear, you slide the teeth anticlockwise - but in fact its moving the cam gear clockwise.

    So everything apart again.

Set the cam gear to one tooth advanced, or in this case of being in the S13 "Neutral"

Replaced cam tensioner with brand new gasket

Started her up and immediately sounds way way way angrier...sounds like it actually has cams now.

before it was quiet and flat.

Took it for a test drive and boost was hitting in about a grand earlier.

so i would call that a success.

    https://youtu.be/q26JGkNm600

Car is booked in for a retune next break.

    so hopefully this time

everything is right with it and i can make some power.

    thats to come later thos.

Motley crew at collie I liked the vectras aero! Did you time any of your laps?

Re: rockers jumping off. You got an oil pressure gauge? I've only broken one in my time and that one was due to low oil pressure because half my oil had disappeared. The reason for that was the engine was eating it/spitting it out. I noticed the e85 blowby was bad and switching oils fixed it up.

Maybe the rockers getting smashed is due to oil pressure dropping because the oil is breaking down/getting eaten/spat out due to its incompatability to e85?

Collie was a great day and crew, will defo do again.

Prior to oil filter relocator i had one (during the duck up i did not get it reinstalled)

It has allways had good oil pressure.

During the oil filter relocator i changed from castrol racing oil to the Penrite ten/tenths? or whatever that E85 oil is.

TBH the blowby did not overly concern me, its a old engine and prob hard a hard life, now its a highly modified tired old engine :)

When i do my oil filter relocation, version 2 / maybe 3 I was going to look at fitting an accusump to help maintain oil pressure.

The rocker stoppers have allways been fitted to this engine.

Ill admit i was on limiter a frackload on friday night and i only have myself to blame for them breaking.

I kinda figured both broke to 1)old age 2) me abusing it.

altho at colie i was being good, no limiter bashing and it broke mid braking..not even on power, went to come back on it and running on 3cyl...

proberly way to hard to tell what did it.

But next time i attack it, all the lifters and rockers and etc are coming out and being tested

Shaking steering has plauged many of my S13s... figures I'd find out what the issue was after I got out of owning one.

That blue car looks like a radical. Whatever it is it is fast, that day he was trying to get into the 44s!

Glad your 180sx is playing ball again. Have you always had trouble with rockers flying off?

It does look like a radical...

But it doesn't match any of the cars currently on their website...

It seems to just give me trouble, but rockers seem to be its things atm. I dont hate on it to much, since its a high Km engine under a lot of extra stress.

i bled all the Hydraulic lifters (had air in them) and replaced all the rockers from a  low km engine....maybe it will be happy now, if i keep of redline.

I have made a tool to measure the heights of the valves so you can shim it properly. It slides into the lifter hole and you can kind of swing it from one valve to the other that share the rocker and then you know what size shim you need as it has i dial gauge stuck to it. Between me and a friend we also have a bunch of spare shims and the slotted ones. Can usually get them where you want them. If you think it might help let me know.
