    Hi Guys,

I have lurked around the edges of the forum for a number of years. Finally, I have picked up my first S15!

The car I have bought will be built into a dedicated race car. This will be done on a budget (of sorts), however I will spend the money where it is required. The current specs as purchased are:

    Nissian Silvia 200SX S15 Spec S
    2001
    Apexi AVCR Boost Controller
    HKS boost gage
    HKS air filters
    Cusco strut bar
    D2 Full racing suspension
    Cusco oil catch tank
    Apexi intercooler
    Apexi Power FC ECU
    Apexi Turbo Timer
Competition quality sound system (First thing to go)
ORC Twin plate carbon clutch and lightened fly wheel
    Aftermarket exhaust manifold
    HKS Dump pipe
    Full HKS exhaust
    HID Headlights
18 inch Gmax deep dish rims
    Running 300 bhp

    (Taken from Car sales ad)

Over the coming months I will be pulling the car apart and making a number of modifications to get the car ready to run in the "Improved Production" category at Barbagallo Raceway.

To make my life easier, I have set up a Facebook page to chronicle the development. If you are interested, feel free to like the page and check in every once in a while.

The car is still registered, so may even make a cruise or two until it gets taken off the road for good. I'm sure I will have lots of questions and using the Search function regularly. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Also, if anyone is interested in getting involved with helping build and run the car at the track, please let me know.

    Looks good! like the red.

IMO this is needed for track work in a silvia:

    1. Baffeled oil sump
    2. Oil cooler
    3. Larger radiator

    Good luck!!

The build will be pretty comprehensive (I've built a couple of race cars in the past)

    Basic plans include.

    1. 17x8 RPF1 Enkei rims (Maximum width for the class it will run in)

    2. 245/40 A050 Yokohamas all round (if they fit the front - other wise 225/45 on the front)

    3. Engine is still a wild card. At the moment I am planning on running in the "Under 2L" Class This means either we build a NA 2.0L Engine OR build a 1.2L Turbo (Billet Crank & longer custom made rods)

    4. Winged sump with baffles is a no brainer

    5. Radiator - I'll keep an eye on what the standard one can do

    6. Oil Cooler  - will be adding an oil temp gauge, so will add oil cooler IF required - Everything you add is more weight.

    7. Hoping the standard 6 box will be up to the punishment - keeping in mind we will be only making around 220 rwhp with the 1.2L turbo

Heaps more planned, but like our face book page to see what happens!

The common issue with them is the circlip/snap ring breaks out of the groove and causes all sorts of shift problems. The fix there is to machine the groove deeper and provide the ring more surface area to but up against.

Syncro failures are not common nor are gear set failures.

The noise you hear through an S15 box is very common and was acknowledged by nissan in the early stages however few were fixed as the noise was at the time deemed to be acceptable for a sports car.
The problem has been identified as the front two constant mesh gears. The input shaft and the lay shaft's both have a fixed gear that like to become noisy in the teeth over time. The biggest cause seems to be poor lubrication/oil quality.
I have seen dealers replacing bearings, thrust bearings, spigot bushes etc etc however of all the boxes I have seen pulled down they all display the same or very similar wear markings on the gear faces.
Replacing the gears and using a good quality oil will fix the noisy box issue. Its not necessary to overhaul the box just to replace the gears. You can get away with just replacing the parts that are worn. Typically syncro's and majority of the bearings are re-usable.

    http://www.nissansil...9

There is also a massive amount of information here on the 6 speed:

    http://zilvia.net/f/...ad.php?t=362303

I have 5 speed in mine so no probs xD

Apparently you can weld the circlip.

You need to get it done properly. Welding the circlip brings other problems with it. Its all explained in an article by the guy who does it. Ill try find it now.

I think for the price you might as well go a RB/Z32 box. If we are talking longer term. Or just bust the 6 speed box and buy another later on lol.

Apparently you can get a 350/370z 6speed to fit.  They are apparently bullet proof.  Not sure if the ratios are right though.

    Thanks for the website Munt

Depends what the ipra rules allow. But if your getting the wallet out for rb/z32 you mayaswll get the mazworx z33 bellhousing because its 11ty times better than an adapter plate and you can have another 6 speed close ratio box.

S15 6 speeds are pretty strong apart from the circlip problem.

I have the mazworx kit and it was worth every dollar

The bell housing is about USD500. Add shipping USD$250? Cant be cheap.

But I would probably try to source the tailshaft locally.

Add a brand new CD009 gearbox USD1900+shipping+taxes haha.

PS: I think we've side track off the fellas build. He probably wouldn't be needing the above on a NA track car.

Hey guys, all good info. The plans have changed already, and we may now look at running in the Street Cars class instead if IP. This means we don't need to run a restrictor in the turbo, so will most likely build up a SR20VET, possibly even stroked to chase the horsepower. This also means the stock gearbox will not cope, so info on gearbox options is great.

That bell housing looks pretty good Munt, what is the Z33 box like?

I dont have it installed yet but the cd(z33/34) box is stronger than an rb box and you can pick them up for 1kaud second hand or 2kusd brand new, its the best youre going to get before getting an aftermarket box. Also has a similar close gear ratio to an s15 box with 5th being 1:1. You can get an adapter playe kit for z33 aswell but i dont know how good it is.

If you are interested i have a p11 sr20ve i would let go for the right price.

PJ quickbits was selling their SR20VET not long ago (20k). Was pushing 550rwkw or something? Not sure if it was that motor or another that made 900hp lol.

I think there was another VET going around for sale too.

Honestly, I'ld look at doing that too if one of my forged engines were to go.

Mark there is some fresh discussion of gearbox options (z33 v z32 v RB25) for a track silvia here:

    http://nissansilvia....owtopic=2447387

TL:DR brand new Z33 box is the way to go, but requires a bit of work to make it fit.

Thanks Guys, The Z33 box looks like the best way to go, and keeping the budget in check at the same time. Lets face it, a sequential Hollinger would be great, but I have a family and a mortgage that come first!

Munt, I'll shoot you a PM. Not sure I am ready for the engine build, but worth taking a look at.
