sr20 ke70 build

Recommended Posts

I picked up a cheap auto ke70 corolla back in February which I've slowly been working on. Plans were to fix up all the rust and a few dents and give a some fresh paint, then buy a half cut with a sr20det and put it in. So far all the panel work is done and paint is on, a few panel still need to be cut back and a few touch ups are needed. About a week ago I picked up a half cut 180sx blacktop with 114k on it, so far i have completely stripped out the half cut and started to play with different suspension/brake/cross member/control arm setups to work out which will fit best as i want to use the power steering/brakes and suspension from the 180. Once that's in and going plan it to use a hilux diff with corolla mounts welded on, custom tail shaft, maybe clean up the interior a bit and then do my best to get it licensed.

so after seeing the price of a genuine garrett v band flange i decided to buy a $30 v band kit and turn it down to the right size and made up a dump pipe http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridemx21

Went to order harder rear springs and this happened http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridemx21/BCB7C0F6-1E69-48AF-A416-256C6B91B013_zpsosphtvpo.jpg   http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridem

S13 cluster is the goer man, it means all gauges will work as factory too. It so easy to wire up I can give you the pinouts & wire colors if you like? Will look and work so much better than anyth

test fitted the engine today, everything seems to fit pretty well

Hey Jake looking good. So what you working on atm? controll arms and stuff yeah? gotta come and chek it out soon

at the moment just finding places to mount everything and working out where its all going to fit. will need to pull engine out soon and put the battery tray on the other side, drill a bigger hole for the loom, get an rb20 box so the shifter hole lines up, fit up a hydraulic pedal box, make up some radiator mounts, do something to make steering fit together (s13 rack-ke70) change the mounts (tiny bit higher and further forward). so plenty of jobs to to keep me busy before the engine goes back in to stay

Got a few little bits and pieces done, engine was taken back out and the sr gearbox was sold to make way for an rb20 box which I'm yet to purchase. Battery tray has been removed and welded onto the other side of the engine bay and started on my custom clutch setup which will basically be a modified 180sx setup, need to change the shape of the pedal and change the spring setup to make room.

how come you sold the sr box to get an rb one?

dont you still need the sr bell housing for that swap ?

going to be a fun little car when its done

with an rb20 box the gear shifter will sit in the original ke70 shifter hole. Im taking other peoples build threads word for this as it says they bolt straight up and the shifter is 80mm futher forward than the sr one.

as for the bell housing one of my friends had a spare blown sr box laying around so im using the housing from that.

it does work

have done a few sr swaps for ae86's and you need to use the rb box with sr bell housing

doesnt quite line up perfect in the 86 hole but its a hell of a lot closer

Yeah, to the best of my knowledge, SR & RB box use same gearset & shafts but box casting & shifter position is different.

The gearset is the same but I know the shifters are not interchangeable, so this was enough for me to believe what ive read in a few other build threads

it would be a little further back on the ke too but im moving the enigne another 35mm forward to make it line up better and also give me some firewall clearance and make the clutch master fit in the engine bay

police decided to save a few lives on our roads yesterday and pull me over for no apparent reason and sticker my van again which means now i need to waste time lifting it up and taking it over the pits, so less time to work on the rolla. on the up side i picked up these coilovers today which need some tlc but where cheap and perfect for my needs.

picked up a blown up sr block cheap for some spare parts, has a hole in the block but the head is ok and has a decent clutch and flywheel, tomei sump, alt, ps pump, etc.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridemx21/IMG_6357.jpg

pulled my clutch and flywheel off and realized it was pretty stuffed, as was the rear main. got a new rear main from covs for $7 and chucked it on and grabbed the lightened flywheel and clutch off the spare block and torqued it all up. the clutch isn't in the best of shape and is way excessive for a stock engine but its better than the other one i have and will do the job for now.

picked up this aircon box off a friends ae71 and swapped him for the blank pipe mine had.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridemx21/IMG_6361.jpg

had to rip the dash out to pull out the heater box as the pipe snapped off it and will need to be welded back on and also to give me room in fitting up my pedalbox and wiring up the sr

Is this going to be road registered/engineered? From what i've heard (could be wrong) people have had trouble licensing corollas with sr20dets as the power-to-weight ratio is to great?

Are you custom making the engine mounts yourself? or getting a workshop to do them? Also any plans for the rear suspension?

Contemplating going sr20de when/if i pop the 4k in my rolla.

Yes i will be road registering it. Ive sent off the mod permit forms and received an "approval in principal to modify" so this shouldn't be a problem, I just need to find an engineer to sign off on my work. From memory the weight of a ke70 can take up to around 2.4L turbo or 4L N/A engine (all that info can be found here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/veh...n/vsb_ncop.aspx ). Engine mounts I will be making myself, although I have a workshop in my backyard. I could get away with using the engine mounts i got but everything will fit better if i custom make some. As far as rear suspension goes ive thought about removing springs and replacing the shock with a coilover setup, but i think ill just end up getting some stiffer springs and cutting them to the length i want (AU falcon springs are suppose to be suitable)

its nothing to do with power to weight. they go by displacement or No. of cylinders Vs the weight of the car or original displacement.

so a 1.6L?? to a 2.0L shouldnt be much of a problem. adding a turbo does throw a spanner in the works though.

Huh, so according to that I could run a 6l n/a or a 3.6 turbo in my car :P

Someone go find me a vq35 and a turbo kit.. I'm going to get my hacksaw

Car's looking the good man, I'm keen to see it with some wheels on and the engine in.. Some nice attention to detail going on here

so sr20 and rb20 are definately different gearbox. maybe the same gearset? but housing wise they are very different as is the selector part, although that may be interchangeable.

rb box with sr housing lines up the shifter hole with the hole in the floor

more engine photos for no real reason

also want peoples opinion on this cluster, obviously this is just a mock up and ill do it properly if i leave it but seems like it will work better as the speedo, tacho and temp gauge will work and ill only need to modify the fuel gauge where as with the corolla one i need a cable speedo setup, no tacho, need to adapt temp sensor but i will have a fuel gauge and no spacers in the dash. also considering fiberglass to make it flush and also get rid of the standard stereo and put a couple of gauges there instead?

bolted up the suspension to see how things fit...

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/ridemx21/IMG_6381.jpg

not to the best

although it looks like some mods can be made here and possible at the top to space things out a little
