You are the first person I have heard of running the HFM cams in W.A. I saw someone post about them on Nissan Silvia that the cams destroyed their engine. Was tempted to grab a set of them but due to no testing being done with them, went for the ole faithful Poncams instead.

Any reason you chose the HFM over anything else?

Hello Friends,   Today i will tell you about my 180sx, i took her off the road about 6 years ago to put a vq30det into it and thus far i have not finished it. ...wait not that one, the other one.

Love it!, keep the updates coming

The VQ30det is from a nissan Cima, its an all alloy 3l V6 with a single turbocharger. Steve from Maytech imports them and does adaptor plates etc for them.     Haven't done much since last update. s

Hey,

orgionally i was going to run with stock cams and not even worry about it, then couple weeks before tune decided to cams it up - i went with these because Gktech had them (have alot of trust in these guys previously) / they were cheap & i knew shipping would be quick.

Gave them + tomei cam springs to mechanic and he installed it, car ran fine after.

TBH i didnt do alot of research into them, i bought some secondhand parts of a guy who was running them and said they were great.

So it boiled down to time and i thought if i got some cams from Aus, they would definatley arive in time to be installed before tune.

I have spoke with 2 people in WA that have the cams (one before and one after installing them)

after i queried why mine were sheet they both told me the same thing "they are designed for a vct motor so you need to adjust the intake cam, otherwise it will be retarded"

My mech just thought they were bolt in and just did them as you would install drop in cams. so they are 10 degrees or so retarded.

I have heard lots of things about HFM since this and actually looking into it.

I'm actually waiting to hear back from the mechanic today as i have been exchanging emails with them & i cant fault there email service at this stage.

i'm waiting to hear from there mechanic as basically there also scratched up and every single one has wear markings and pittings i have never seen before, let alone on a 2 hour old set of cams.

so im not sure whats going to happen, i am resistant to run the cams given what they look like, but i'm waiting on discussions with HFM about this.

Ideally i think id like a refund and just order some new Tomei's

But we will see what happens.

Hard to go wrong with proven Tomei cams. Also I've seen a few sets going around for dirt cheap too (I would snag some up).

Alternatively, run HKS cams like myself :)

I wouldn't go BC cams either, I've seen them compared to Tomei and they are sheet.

How much power are you expecting to make?

FYI - I run Yaris coils instead of LS coils, they have built in igniters and sit inside the coilpack cover unlike LS coils. Something to consider since Hayden did it for me.

Yeah if i order cams it will be HKS or Tomei, prob tomei as the valve springs match...everything should match right....ahahaha

Power wise it should have no trouble pushing 350 rwhp....might run out of injectors towards 400

Yeah i considered the yaris and the audi r8 options, i like how they are way closer to stock looking and bolt in.

I ended up with ls2 coils cause a set of 8 poped up for $100 and it was to cheap to pass up.

(they have internal ignitors to)

So another weekend of win, fail, win's in a typical #srlife story.

Got the turbosmart plumback BOV welded in at metalcraft marine...left josh with a side project to do also.

http://i.imgur.com/HdEms6uh.jpg

Onto cams.....i ended up ordering tomei 270s from frsport...was quick delivery as allways and a great price.

Mech went about swapping them for me, when i rocked up he was removing the rocker again...aparently moments into the run in it made a death noise.....fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

After hand cranking engine noticed the exh cam was not spinning. Further investigation found the pressed in dowel pin had cleanly ejected itself....somehow using majic???

Dowel pin was in the sump.

http://i.imgur.com/XsGFoOPh.jpg

So lots of swearing.

Did leakdown test, nothing abnormal.

Smashed it back in with loctite

http://i.imgur.com/0VXYXHqh.jpg

Started her up n hoped for the best.

http://i.imgur.com/p6LtiKzh.jpg

Pured like a kitten, thank frackery.

So lastly picked up my ls2 coil mount from josh.

http://i.imgur.com/tPP7aOih.jpg

So in the next installment we make spark plug leads, get a retune and hopefully go drifting!

Wow, that mount is nice :) Shouldnt have any bonnet clearance issues?

When i was test fitting them, i put them vertical and it hit the bonnet, i laid them horizontally and could close the bonnet.

i can assume they are close as they aren't to big, but the only way id know for sure is closing the bonnet and somehow tasking a photo?

i'm waiting for a vented bonnet to pop up FS so i guess that will change the situation again toooo.

I have those purpose made spacers for the bonnets somewhere, i might end up fitting them for the heat dispersion...i just don't like the look of the bonnet sitting up.

I've though about a vented bonnet too. I'm undecided though - middle vent, or side vents, or a combination. The other potential issue is water. Ideally though, air should flow in through the front and then out the top to assist with cooling.

Maybe just buy some vents and mount them on the stock bonnet.

Yeah tbh i was just going to get a dpeed or something ones there only like $450 right?

id i did my own vents id be to lazy and just cut holes in it and leave it like that.

Bonnet risers? I distinctly remember reading somewhere that they actually have 0 effect on cooling efficiency at all, and if anything actually have a detrimental effect on keeping things cool under the bonnet.

Casual reading: http://www.driftworks.com/forum/technical/154593-bonnet-spacers.html

Yeah i bought the rizers from GKtech when doing one of my mass order's, originally it was for the VQ to get bonnet clearance as its pretty tall engine....had nothing to do with flow or heat at thats time.

after doing that reading, i guess it makes way more sense.

ill only put them in if i need clearance for the coils or something stupid. I do agree 100% make the car look retarded.

Well i haven't been sticking to my regular updates as its been testing my patience somewhat.

sheetter went in for a tune, last month. Shat out 337Hp @ 17psi with a fair bit of lag.

http://i.imgur.com/E7ofPqCh.jpg

we went out to barbs for a drift practice, while fun i was not overly impressed with the lag.

http://i.imgur.com/fkNXS5Ah.jpg

so this brings us closer today.

Last break i took it for a drive and there was a nice tick tick tick.

This break, cam cover off, find this. <intake cam>

http://i.imgur.com/0JlPWi0h.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/zQQSMJ0h.jpg

pretty much #srlife

Ive put the old HFM 264 intake cam back in and took it for a thrashing session.

So far it seems fine, well, its not broken too so i don't know what to say.

So what now?

i have no idea what caused the cam to die, my mechanic has no idea and its all a bit of a mystery.

got a few metal flakes in the oil change, as to be expected.

http://i.imgur.com/gJoFXa7h.jpg

putting sump plug back in, Gktech spec, literally just above hand tight and it snapped the head of.

very disappointed.

had to tap it out of the sump

http://i.imgur.com/bgIcHumh.jpg

I changed the exhaust up, to a full 3inch with single rear muffler, instead of the yum cha setup it was before with 2 mufflers...sounds a bit more racecar now.

so where to for now?

I have a GTX3067 on order, hoping to get rid of some of the lag...the 3082 is under utilized anyway.

i need to sort out a catch can setup, getting some serious blow by.....ummm delicious.

Yeah it was literally hand tight, i had not even attached the ratchet to it.

ill just stick to the magnet on the oil filter.

Might be time for an update,

i gave myself a bit of the break from the racecar and actually enjoyed myself for a couple of weekends....instead of sweating, cursing and bleeding for this sheetcunt car.

Now where are we?

replaced the gearbox with a S14 one....my gearbox pops out of gears on decelerations and it was highly annoying.

no photos of this, but you know what a gearbox looks like?

I removed everything turbo side and re-made the gate pipe. now the gate is in a serviceable location.

Installed heavier springs into the gate to....cause more boost.

http://i.imgur.com/pUJPacL.jpg

Melts made up my coil leads...

http://i.imgur.com/JNAQmSf.jpg

we actually managed to get it to fire up first try, even with some more than average internet wiring advice....double checking everything for yourself does wonders!

Got the GTX3067 installed and sitting pretty.

http://i.imgur.com/yDb2eXR.jpg

managed to get all the existing pipework to line up, just had to trim the intake pipe and use two different joiners for the new sizes (3082 was 4inch in and 2.5 out / this is 3inch in and 2inch out)

mandatory progress photo

http://i.imgur.com/nKR2VVG.jpg

mandatory CAT photo.

http://i.imgur.com/hRgOaLS.jpg

so next break =

Install new injectors, moving from 1000cc to 1550cc

Sort out a catch can

getting tuned and hope like frackery it does not have any more issues.

My cat does the same thing!!!! every time I work on the car its either in it or on it!

Coil setup looks great!

Its all cutesy and cuddles, until she tries to eat the wiring or claw at your face....typical female moodswings.

another break, another few days of SR fail's. or mainly my own fails.

starting from start.

hotside pipe modified with a plate so could tap in the bleed valve.

http://i.imgur.com/TCT5qBc.jpg

Installed a forefront industries - Provent type catch can...has a washable filter inside...have one on the 4wd and it works great, so figured it would work on the SR.

I'm not a fan of the clear pipe, but on the dyno it was fun watching the dirty misty air come in one side and nice clean air come out the other side.

http://i.imgur.com/ArOZLzX.jpg\

I had the cam cover of the check timing, as with the vct intake gear i was trying to advance it a tooth to make it run on the sr. (i did this previously i just wanted to double check + tensioner was leaking oil)

during this whole thing i managed to start the car afterward with the ratchet still in the main pulley....it quickly undid the bolt for me.

http://i.imgur.com/eeS66oB.jpg

Put the new injectors in (from xspurt 1000cc to xspurt 1650cc) and low and behold the plugs are different!

I thought they would be the same so i didn't order any.....

find this out on the morning i'm meant to be getting a tune!

Lucky MTQ had adaptor plug and i was able to get that problem sorted quickly.

Car went up on the dyno.

Once again it did not preform as expected.

Boost was slow to spool and power was low.

Once again, cam timing was brought up.

that's and the last part of the session the cam tentioner starting pissin out oil again.

It also started missing and while changing spark plugs i managed to break one. thats was a frack around.

andrew managed to get the thread out cleanly, lucky enough.

http://i.imgur.com/nqTQnWL.jpg

and the dyno result, see it makes boost slightly earlier than the old setup, but only a few hundred RPM.

http://i.imgur.com/DHeO4ELh.jpg

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................. after another disappointing run with the car.

Had a few beer and started reading online again about le cams.

Started to get a picture of where i went wrong.

I have the standard cam gear (not adjustable) and i rotated it one tooth anti clockwise

This would be vaguely correct if it was an adjustable cam gear, you slide the teeth anticlockwise - but in fact its moving the cam gear clockwise.

So everything apart again.

Set the cam gear to one tooth advanced, or in this case of being in the S13 "Neutral"

Replaced cam tensioner with brand new gasket

Started her up and immediately sounds way way way angrier...sounds like it actually has cams now.

before it was quiet and flat.

Took it for a test drive and boost was hitting in about a grand earlier.

so i would call that a success.

https://youtu.be/q26JGkNm600

Car is booked in for a retune next break.

so hopefully this time

everything is right with it and i can make some power.

Car progress is looking good! Sounds great for a cammed sr.

You did miss out on a cat pic this post... kinda disappointed.

Muchio sorry.

We are baby sitting two dogs....so the cat has taken up living in the shed for the last week....as they all refuse to get along.

She likes to sleep in this plastic box, that's high up...must be her safe fort?

Ok where are we?

Its been an epic weekend! with lots of rain to demotivate me from working on the car.

Before drift practice friday, decided to enclose the fuel system, the easiest way i could think of, cheap and nasty toolbox!

I ordered a Tarks oil plate to replace the bottom oil plate, as i don't like the adaptors.

Im also going to get shorter line and put the oil filter somewhere useful

thats to come later thos.

installed go pro of the wing.

Fixed rocker arm on saturday, stole some random sr parts and tried out the "dual guide" conversion for the intake side

Down to collie sunday for trackwork.

So whats up next?

Sort out the rocker arm drama

Sort out the oil filter relocator better

Get better front pads - had serious brake fade issues

some other things im forgetting

Do more skids

Motley crew at collie I liked the vectras aero! Did you time any of your laps?

Re: rockers jumping off. You got an oil pressure gauge? I've only broken one in my time and that one was due to low oil pressure because half my oil had disappeared. The reason for that was the engine was eating it/spitting it out. I noticed the e85 blowby was bad and switching oils fixed it up.

Maybe the rockers getting smashed is due to oil pressure dropping because the oil is breaking down/getting eaten/spat out due to its incompatability to e85?
